The Revolt of Gunner Asch
A first book of the trilogy - is often compared to Heller's Catch-22. In it, a young and very able German soldier is so repulsed by the cruel injustice in the methods of his unit's non-commissioned officers that he openly rebels against them. Setting them up in situations that are inescapable an often hilarious, he quite simply boils them in their own bureaucratic juices. Veterans from both sides have praised Kirst's Asch series on the basis that they, like Kirst, were there: and Kirst tells it as it was.
